Best Friend

I remember
us laughing and joking
like children in the spring
we were the best of friends
like brother and sister
we shared our secrets
and bared our souls
we held back nothing
but when more was mentioned
you smiled and giggled
you said
"Anybody would be lucky to have you…
and I really am flattered."
Though I asked it all
and exposed my core
you lied and said
"I'm in love with someone else"
In the chaos of it all
not one but two hearts were broken
as a trust
and a friendship were shattered
but somehow you didn't care
and went about your life
laughing and joking like a child
with your brand-new best friend.
